DIY Bat Wings
It's one week until Halloween and as always I'm endeavoring to make Moo a cool homemade costume. Step one is the Bat wings.
What you'll need:
1/2m black felt
1/2 black stiff fusing (optional but makes wings nice and firm)
1/2m satin lining
1m x 20mm black elastic
2 balloon sticks on boning would do
tailors chalk
Method:
Measure child's arm-span to wrist, this will be how wide your wings will be. Fuse Felt if you are choosing do so. Fold felt in half and draw a quarter circle. Now draw your desired wing shape like pictured and cut out.
Fold satin in same method, but cut 2cm smaller around edge. Using your two sticks place at longest wing point. Stitch a 1.5cm tunnel (two rows of stitching 1.5cm apart) insert sticks and trim if needed.
Stitch the two layers together around edge with zigzag stitch.
Using your elastic make two straps that cross over the body mine were 44cm long. stitch in place above shoulders and either side of waist. Make two wrist straps 7cm long stitch in place.
Fly little bat.
The rest will be reveled next week.

DIY : ribbon wand

Ribbon wands- so good for indoor play on raining days and homemade birthday presents.
You'll Need:
10mm dowel
25mm ribbon
15mm split ring
Small ring screw
Washi tape
Method:
Cut your dowel into wand lengths using a little saw - the standard length from hardware store is 1.8m, which makes into 4 x 45cm wands.
Sand the ends so they are nice and smooth.
Screw your ring screw into one end of the dowel - the dowel is soft so this is very easy.
Decorate your wand if you wish - this time I have used some cute washi tape my friend gifted me from a recent trip to Japan. I have also dip painted wand or left plain.
Cut a 2.5m length of ribbon, fold in half and thread through your split ring, create a loop and stitch in place.
We''re ready for play!
DIY feather headdress
for Moo and her tribe of mischief mates...
DIY Feather Headdress
You'll need:
Large white feathers x5
Assortment of small coloured feathers 8 -12
Buttons and sequins - whatever else you feel like decorating with
25mm wide x 90cm long ribbon or grosgrain tape
15mm wide x 30cm long ribbon or grosgrain tape
Needle and thread
Craft glue
Sewing machine
Method:
Fold your 25mm ribbon in half to find the centre front for your headdress.
Place the white feather evenly along 15cm in the centre of your 25mm ribbon, stick down with a little craft glue.
Place coloured feather over the white ones extending out to the sides a further 5cm, stick down with craft glue.
Place 15mm ribbon over the top of the feathers, fold raw ends under 5mm and stick in place. Stitch over the top of this ribbon to secure all the feathers.
Now decorate by glueing on your buttons and sequins. You may want to hand stitch these to make them less likely to fall off.
Keep the ribbon ends long to tie up behind your head.

DIY bunny ears
I couldn't resist making Moo and her cousins some bunny ears for Easter. Now they can hop hop around like little bunnies while searching for easter eggs left by the real Easter Bunny!
You'll need:
kraft card to make your ear shape templates
white felt
pink felt
pipe cleaners
elastic
and a sewing machine.
Method:
Cut out white felt as your outer ear and pink felt as inner ear. Stitch layers together. Insert a pipe cleaner in between layers, stitch to hold in place. fold ears in half and stitch up 2cm at front edge to make the ear have nice shape. Measure elastic around child's head and stitch ends together. Position ears and stitch onto the elastic.

DIY ombre tulle skirt
This week we experimented with dip dyeing a tulle skirt for Moo. I like the look of ombre dyed fairy dresses and skirts you see in costume stores, but don't want to pay that much.
What you'll need:
Tulle skirt - I made Moo's out of two layers of pink tulle.
One tin of dye - I choose Bronze Rose (a reddy brown) Multipurpose dye from Dylon (which I have just discovered the tins are in discontinued)
Bucket
Clip coat hanger, make sure it wider than you bucket.
Instructions:
Make up dye to packet instructions into bucket, filling with boiling water to desired amount you want it to come up from the bottom of your skirt (approx 12cm). Clip skirt on hanger and lower into bucket of dye balancing hanger on top edge and leave for an hour or so. Rinse in clean water and dry.
